World Junior Hockey: Canada Wins Gold

Canada, seeking its fourth consecutive World Junior Hockey title, faced Sweden today for the gold medal after beating the U.S. 4-1 yesterday. Not wanting a repeat of their first meeting with the Swedes (it was Canada’s only loss in the tournament), the young Canadians were looking for nothing less than a win.
And that they did. Unfortunately they needed overtime to get the winning goal. After a great first period that began with a goal just 1:27 into the game and ended with a second goal just before the period would come to a close. There were no goals scored in the second period. Team Canada goaltender Steve Mason let one in early in the third period and just when it looked like Canada would walk away with the win, Sweden pulled their goaltender to get an extra man in on the attack and with the faceoff near the Canada goal Sweden scored their second with 36 seconds remaining in the period.
In the overtime period Kitchener Ranger Matt Halischuk scored the winning goal, giving Canada a 3-2 win over Sweden.
Kitchener’s newest Ranger, Steve Mason, was named MVP. Not bad for a goalie who started off the tournament with a poor performance against Finland and nearly landed himself in the coach’s bad books…not bad indeed.
If you like betting on hockey you can bet on the NHL! There are plenty of games on tap tonight!
